Learn Drawing Quickly: Angle of View

For my third blog post, the next step to learn how to draw was to understand shapes and how they change to the human eye depending on the point you’re looking at them from. The example I decided to draw was the cup. The cup is an easier example to show the way it changes when looked at. When viewed from the top, it’s circular. But when looked at from a lower level the circle becomes an oval. In the book Lean Drawing Quickly, the author says that this gives your shape more of a realistic feel (Finmark 30).

In Learn Drawing Quickly the author says, “Basic shapes appear to change depending upon the angle from which you look at them- this gives your drawing the realistic appearance” (Finmark 30). So I drew some examples of what it would look like staring at a cup from different perspectives. This is my final product, I think I did pretty well, but I can improve and make the drawing look more as if you are looking directly at it.

Do you think drawing shapes as if you were looking at them are crucial to making the drawing look more realistic rather than adding the tone?

  1. Hey Angela, I really like your finished product! I think that it's very interesting about how the shapes can change. I believe that drawing the shapes like how you would look at them are more important than adding tone when you're drawing, because if you don't get the angle right then it gets harder to add the correct tones.

  2. Thank you Renee! And I agree with you about the shapes changing depending when you look at them. Also, when drawing, I believe it's more important to get the angle of the shape you draw because if you don't and decide to add the tones to it, it will look like a complete mess. Rather than the other way around.

  3. Hi! I think both the shape and tone of the drawings are equally important in making the drawing look realistic. Without one, the other doesn't work as well as with both together. For example, the drawing at the very bottom is supposed to be a top down view, but without any tone inside or around the cup, it looks like an awkward shape. Regardless, you got the angles perfectly and I think you did a great job!

    1. I see where you are coming from, and it makes sense. They rely on one another to work together to make the drawing come to life.

  4. Hi Angela, good job on your drawing! I believe that how you look at and view shapes and objects is important when making a picture look realistic. Drawing something the way you view it adds some perspective to the picture. I am also working on incorporating more realistic techniques in my drawings as well, and I think you did a fantastic job showing how shapes and objects can change depending on the viewpoint, and how that can make a picture look more realistic.

    1. Thank you Rachel! I'm glad you agree. I tried to draw different view points so people could get a better idea of what I'm talking about, if they are more of a visual learner.
