Eclectic means deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources. You can have an eclectic taste in music, books...just about everything, including fashion! People who dress eclectically don't have one style they cling to in particular. Instead, they pull inspiration from many different styles and mix it into something all their own. "A successful eclectic look is evidence that the wearer possesses true personal style. A tried-and-true classic dresser can have her own style, too, but she relies to a certain extent on tradition; the eclectic dresser navigates the world of style with only her instincts for a compass." (Brooks, 191) With eclectic dressing, no rules that may come with the other styles really apply to you, so it's fun and easy. All it takes is knowing what you like, and what looks good together. Having an eclectic style means you're not afraid to try new things out, but also know to hold onto old pieces you love. Your closet sort of becomes a "Greatest Hits" overtime - the best of the best from all different styles. When picking out an eclectic outfit, you have to follow your heart. Want to wear a grungy leather jacket but a girly dress? Do it!! That's the philosophy of someone who dresses this way: taking pieces that may not appear to go together in theory, and tying them into one seamless look. "It's kind of like making a salad at a salad bar: You choose all the things you like, all the while keeping in mind how they will mix together. Just because you like both raisins and onions doesn't mean you'll enjoy them in the same mouthful." (Brooks, 191) It's very important to consider how the pieces, although different, will compliment each other. My example outfit mixes elements of many different styles into one. I'm wearing a cozy, classic cream colored sweater and a denim skirt, some booties and a multi-colored bohemian inspired bag! The possibilities are endless, as this style is very personal and just a mix of whatever you like from each type of look. Do you tend to fit more into a specific style, like minimalism or street, or the broader eclectic category? Thanks for reading! :)
Hi, I really enjoyed your blog and how you thoroughly explained what eclectic is all about. To answer your question, I would say I dress more "street". Nice blog.
