The Fundamentals of Drawing Still Life with Deziree Gomez

Ever since I was little i've had an interest with art and drawing. I have always been so interested in how people can produce beautiful images with just a piece of paper and a pencil.

The book i chose for my IRP is "The Fundamentals of Drawing Still Life" By Barrington Barber. In this book they start you off with basic exercises and the aim is to prepare you for drawing still life.     In this section the author says "Before the composing of any picture can be effective, the artist needs to work hard to ensure that the quality of his drawing has reached the point where he can concentrate on the design of the picture and can not be concerned about the details of drawing the objects within it." (Barber, Pg 9)

The first Exercise in the book they want you to do is to draw a series of circles next to each other , all the same size and they want you to do it until they look like perfect circles. "Persist until the circles on the paper in front of you look like the perfect ones you can see in your mind's eyes. When you achieve this, you will know that your eye and mind are coordinating." (Barber, Page 12)

As you go through the beginning of the book you can tell how the exercises become a bit more difficult but one of the last easy exercises is one where you practice a few S-shaped figures. "You will constantly come S-shaped figures like these when drawing still life." (Barber, Page 13)
This book seems like a very helpful book for drawing still life because of how thorough they are in explaining that before you can even begin drawing still life's you first have to master shapes and textures.

  1. Wow Deziree! It's great that you chose to improve on drawing. I am not an artist myself, but I can imagine that it will take a lot of patience. Always start small (like the circles and S-shaped figures you did) and overtime you'll be able to draw much more complicated things. Keep up the good work!
